Learning Support

The Learning Support Department is an integral part of Sevenoaks Prep and fully embraces the School’s “Way of Life”. We pride ourselves in the knowledge that we know every child as individuals and support them to unlock their potential. Every child has a unique profile of learning strengths and weaknesses, and we design a tailored individual programme of support for those who need it – alongside boosting their self-esteem.

The Learning Support department works in close conjunction with subject, form and class teachers across the whole school to ensure that support is targeted effectively and a positive partnership with parents is actively encouraged.

The well-resourced Learning Support department is located in the heart of the School and we have a team of experienced, qualified and dedicated specialists who offer a range of support, including the following:

  • accommodation or adjustments within the classroom
  • help within class with teaching assistants and specialist teachers
  • a variety of literacy and numeracy booster groups led by teaching assistants or specialist teachers
  • one-to-one tuition from specialist learning support teachers

We are also fortunate to have access to occupational and speech and language therapists, counsellors and educational psychologists should this support be necessary.

Sevenoaks Prep also supports pupils with English as an additional language (EAL) and their families.  At The Prep, a child is not regarded as having a learning difficulty simply because the language of the home/extended community is different from the language in which she or he is taught at school.  We aim to encourage our pupils with English as an additional language to develop and maintain all the languages in their lives at a level appropriate for their age, wherever possible.  Whilst English is the dominant language used for teaching and learning at The Prep, we are keen to include opportunities for our multilingual pupils to use, share and/or improve acquisition of all their languages.

Our primary aim in the Learning Support and EAL Departments is to promote a love of learning, the belief to achieve and prepare each child for life beyond The Prep.
