Word Explorers

We are delighted to share the success of our very first Word Explorers Day! Children came to school dressed as an adjective of their choice – the more creative, the better. We had sparkly, sporty, sneaky, adventurous, magical and fragile, to name just a few.

The children worked in mixed house groups, collaborating brilliantly as they tackled a wide range of word-based challenges. Using dictionaries and thesauruses, they built walls of synonyms and inventive word chains, discovered the surprising international journeys of everyday words (who knew ketchup comes from ‘Keh jup’ in Cantonese ?), and took part in a scavenger hunt linking countries and flags to their linguistic treasures.

Creativity flourished as they painted colourful calligrams in watercolours, generated digital word clouds, and enjoyed fast-paced games including Boggle, Bananagrams, and anagram challenges. An online Countdown game and a lively “Call My Bluff” assembly added even more excitement, before the day concluded with a truly inspiring author talk by the wonderful author Tom Palmer. It was a wonderful celebration of language, teamwork, and imagination – one we hope will become a much-loved tradition.
