Word Explorers Day

We had a wonderful day of language, creativity and imagination during Word Explorers Day last week!

The children arrived dressed as adjectives, filling the school with an array of sparkling, courageous, mischievous and magnificent characters. In the Pre-Prep, the children began the morning with an exciting adjective catwalk. Children danced, ran and showed off their funkiest moves as they made their way down the runway in the hall before striking a pose at the end. Their friends then had to guess which adjective they were representing!

A particular highlight of the day was an energetic and inspiring workshop with acclaimed writer and rapper Christian Foley who captivated the children with his passion for words and poetry.

Throughout the day, pupils became true linguistic detectives, uncovering the fascinating origins of words and discovering how many modern languages can trace their roots back to Ancient Rome. They also explored the art of calligrams, creating striking visual poems in which the layout of the words helped to illustrate their meaning. Using vivid imagery and creative thinking, the children crafted imaginative kenning poems, before taking on the role of language inventors themselves. Inspired by the playful wordplay of Roald Dahl and the linguistic brilliance of Shakespeare, they devised an array of wonderfully inventive new words and expressions.

It was a fantastic celebration of language that encouraged curiosity, creativity and confidence and the children should be immensely proud of the enthusiasm and imagination they showed throughout the day.
