Co-education has been part of Sevenoaks Prep’s identity for generations, we are the longest standing co-educational Prep School in Sevenoaks. It is not an approach we have adopted over time, but a long-held belief that girls and boys learn best when they learn together. This commitment shapes our curriculum, our culture and the way we support every child.
Co-Education
A community built for shared learning
From the earliest years, pupils at The Prep work, play and problem-solve alongside one another. This everyday interaction helps children develop empathy, communication skills and a natural understanding of different perspectives. They grow up seeing equality in action — in the classroom, on the sports field and in leadership roles — and this shared experience fosters confidence, respect and fairness.
Overcoming gender barriers and fears
In mixed classrooms, ambition is strengthened through the inspiration pupils draw from one another. Girls and boys see each other succeeding across all areas — from STEM to the arts — reinforcing that talent isn’t defined by gender. This mutual encouragement fuels healthy academic and co-curricular competition, motivating children to aim high and take pride in their achievements.
Building character and confidence
Working collaboratively across genders helps pupils develop emotional maturity, resilience and strong social skills. Whether performing in drama, leading assemblies, playing in teams or contributing to service projects, boys and girls learn to listen, negotiate and support one another. These experiences equip them with the character and adaptability they will need at senior school and beyond.
Prepared for a diverse world
Because co-education has been at the heart of The Prep for decades, our environment naturally mirrors the world our pupils will enter. They leave us confident in their ability to communicate, collaborate and lead across genders — essential qualities for future study, work and life.
At Sevenoaks Prep, co-education is more than a structure; it’s a belief that children grow stronger — academically, socially and emotionally — when they grow together.
